With the average commercial dumpster rental costing $385 per week, you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal and the right dumpster. There’s nothing like renting a unit only to discover it’s too small for your site, leaving you with trash bags overflowing, causing contamination risks, and potentially even landing you a heavy fine.
Trashco Inc. to the rescue!
This post has everything you need to know to get the perfect commercial dumpster rental every time. From types, sizes, and what you need to know before you’ve even looked at your options, this is your one-stop shop.
We’ll cover:
Let’s get started.

Whether you’re the manager of a retail store, organizing the trash flow of a strip mall, or trying to keep an office building clean, you’re going to need a commercial dumpster rental. However, to figure out what type (and size) of dumpster you should rent, you need to know a few things.
First, keep in mind that you don’t just need to rent a commercial dumpster - you need to arrange to have it regularly emptied. It’s a cost that no one wants to pay, but it’s the only way to reliably make sure that your waste is appropriately disposed of. You don’t want to be caught with fines for your waste management, right?
Second, managing waste doesn’t end with renting a dumpster and arranging for collection. Your entire team needs to be briefed on what each of your dumpsters is for, and they need to be throwing their trash into the correct bins. Whether that means having dedicated paper and recycling points scattered through the office as well as general trash cans or just checking that everyone is throwing food waste into the correct dumpster, your dumpsters shouldn’t contain mixed types of waste to avoid contamination. For more information on what should and shouldn’t be put in front load dumpsters, check out our previous blog post.
Finally, you should consider whether you’d benefit from additional waste management equipment. Usually this includes compactors and recycling balers, and for most this is overkill. However, for warehouses that produce large amounts of recyclable trash, or locations like strip malls that regularly create a much larger volume of waste, these units could save you the cost of a larger dumpster or reduce the number of collections you need to pay for each month.

Before you dive into a commercial dumpster rental you should also do a bit of research into the amount and types of waste that your location produces. This will let you choose the ideal type and size of container, and save a lot of money in the long term.
Don’t worry, it’s easy!
All you need to do is take a look at the last few months of logs for the waste your site has created. Take note of any regular increases and decreases in trash flow, seasonal influences like the holidays, and upcoming influences like a planned site expansion or downsizing.
Once you know the average amount of waste produced, the types of waste, amount of each type, and how that might change over the coming months, you should know what you need from a commercial dumpster rental to suit your needs. There’s flexibility in terms of dumpster size vs how frequent you have collections (although biodegradable waste shouldn’t be left to sit in a dumpster for long), but you’ll at least know the minimum size unit you’ll need.
Speaking of which…

There are two main types of commercial dumpster rental:
Front load dumpsters are your general-use units that are good for most types of trash, particularly anything that needs to be encased or covered either to protect it from the elements (eg, paper and cardboard) or for health and safety concerns (eg, food and biodegradable waste). You can’t store everything in them - hazardous waste needs to be handled according to your local guidelines - but check out our post on what you shouldn’t put in front load dumpsters for more info.
Roll-off dumpsters are great for bulk waste that’s either too big to be fully encased in a front load dumpster or items that don’t need to be protected or encased until they’re collected. For example, construction debris, scrap wooden pallets, scrap metal, and so on.
As for sizes, check out our front load dumpster size guide and our roll-off dumpster size guide for the full information, but we’ll summarize the key points here.
2, 4, 6, 8, and 10-yard front load dumpsters can hold up to 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 bags of garbage and are suitable for companies with up to 25, 50, 100, 500, and over 500 employees respectively.
15, 30, and 40-yard roll-off dumpsters can hold up to 6, 14, and roughly 19 pickup loads and are suitable for small remodels and cleanouts, office renovations and major construction, and large construction sites respectively.
Remember that the size of your commercial dumpster rental will also depend on how frequently you choose to have collections!

Getting the perfect commercial dumpster rental isn’t an exact science; it depends on everything from your regular waste flow and the types of trash you produce to the dumpster you choose and how frequently you pay to have it collected and emptied. Even with all of the advice above it can be a nightmare to get the best bang for your buck.
