Much like when renting a front-load dumpster, you’ll need to know what size roll-off dumpster you actually need before doing anything else.
Start by recording the amount of waste your business produces over a set amount of time (if you don’t already). Try to also measure the amount of different types of waste, such as cardboard and other recyclables, construction debris, waste bound for landfill, and so on. Track this for at least a week, if not a month or, even better, 2-3 months. This should give you a good idea of the average amount of waste you produce, and thus how much you’ll need to get rid of.
Next, add an allowance to your average waste production to account for seasonal events and random fluctuations. If you have records of how predictable events (such as the holiday period) affect your trash flow then be sure to keep those in mind, but otherwise a 10% or so buffer should cover any regular excess.
Finally, decide whether you’re going to have larger roll-off dumpsters or more frequent waste collections. Balancing these can be tricky, but if you know your local waste collection business’s prices you should be able to find the cheapest solution for your needs. Bear in mind that roll-off dumpsters are suitable for waste that doesn’t need to be encased or covered; for anything else, you’ll also need a front-load dumpster.

15-yard roll-off dumpsters are the smallest we offer here at Trashco Inc., and can roughly hold up to 6 pickup loads of waste.
These are perfect for smaller amounts of construction debris (such as concrete, dirt, and metal), smaller pieces of furniture, and other bulky items that can’t be fully contained in a front-load dumpster. If you’re taking on a project like a small remodel, a small house or storage unit cleanout, or deck demolitions, you’ll probably only need a 15-yard roll-off dumpster to contain the waste.
Keep these smaller dumpsters in mind for larger projects too though! Sometimes it’s cheaper to get a second, smaller unit to contain any waste overflow or a different type of waste that you’re not producing so much of when handling a larger project.
Speaking of larger projects, this is where our 30-yard roll-off dumpsters come in handy. These can hold up to 14 pickup loads of waste, making them perfect for when a 15-yard doesn’t quite cut it.
You’ll need that extra capacity if you’re tackling office renovations, major construction, large home projects, and so on. If you need to dispose of old furnishings, larger pieces of furniture, or significant construction debris, this is likely the size to suit you.
Just remember that you need to keep each type of waste (recyclables, debris, etc.) separate so that they can be processed correctly. You’ll likely also need some front-load dumpsters to dispose of other waste, so don’t forget to account for those in your budget.
The largest container that we offer here at Trashco Inc. is the 45-yard roll-off dumpster. As you might imagine, these are mostly only necessary for heavy-duty projects that will leave you with a huge amount of bulky waste.
For example, if you’re running a large construction site or handling a major demolition project then a 15-or-30-yard roll-off dumpster just isn’t going to hold everything. Between the massive amount of used concrete, masses of glass, metal, and wood, various types of unrecyclable debris, and the contents of any demolition sites prior to destruction, at least one 45-yard dumpster is the only reasonable choice.
Once again, you’ll likely need at least a front-load dumpster or two to contain smaller or biodegradable waste, and it could even be worth renting an additional 15-yard or 30-yard roll-off to cover specific types of waste or any unplanned excess. The best option will always depend on what you’re doing, your budget, the price of different units, and so on, but the guidelines we’ve laid out above are a great start to saving your wallet and sanity when it comes to making a robust waste management plan.
