With a roughly 60/40 split, it’s no secret that more men are in full-time employment than women in the US. It’s a disparity that becomes even more shocking when looking into specific industries, such as waste management.
Today, Trashco Inc. is going to show exactly why that needs to change.
From the massive benefits that diverse leadership (including women) can bring through to the tangible environmental and efficiency advantages, we’ll cover:
Let’s dive right in.
Let’s be real. When you think of a traditional waste management employee, there’s one phrase that comes to mind;
The garbage man.
To be fair, the stereotype of this being a male-dominated industry isn’t entirely unfounded. The International Labor Organization (ILO)’s Department of Statistics estimates that roughly 77% of waste management and recycling employees in the US are male, which is a far cry from equality.
However, just because something has traditionally been true doesn’t mean that it can’t be improved by shaking up the formula.
Similarly, we’re all more aware of the climate crisis than ever. The desire for more sustainable solutions to everything has turned into a need that has to be fulfilled if we’re going to combat the damage that’s already been done via global warming. Yet, at the same time, customers have all-time high expectations for effective, affordable, and reliable services.
Underrepresentation, sustainability, efficiency, and expectations. These aren’t issues that can be individually solved with a single, small change, let alone when you’re tackling all of them at once.
No. To fix these problems you need to fill a gap in your company. You need leadership that will not just play by tradition but blaze a trail for new and innovative approaches to serve your customers while also opening your business to diverse hiring and solutions.
This is how we here at Trashco Inc. have handled the problem.
First we’ll tackle the business operating side of the equation. This is where Trashco Inc. has excelled to prove that we’re the best option for waste management solutions in Laredo and the wider Texas area.

As for fresh perspectives in leadership positions, the American Psychological Association has shown that women not only tend to have more transformational leadership styles than men, but also inherently promote team collaboration and challenge deep-rooted stereotypes that get in the way of a business’ ability to evolve.
Our Vice President, Leticia Resendez, has been (and continues to be) a vital influence in reshaping our company from the ground up. With her drive, determination, and sheer dedication, Trashco Inc. has blazed a trail straight towards a new wave of excellent customer service, community interaction and support, and operational innovation.
Without women like Leticia, Trashco Inc. wouldn’t even be a shadow of what it is today. She has helped solidify and utilize our position as a core part of the community to support not only cleaner streets, but funding and supplies for vital projects. We’ll talk about some specific examples later, but for now let’s dive into why it’s so vital for company leadership to be diverse in the first place.
It can’t be forgotten that the people leading a company reflect its performance and values to customers and employees alike. This is one of the many reasons why having diverse representation in leadership positions matters!
In a survey of 2,250 adults, the Pew Research Center showed that women excel more than men in 5 out of 8 core leadership qualities! These include honesty, intelligence, compassion, creativity, and how outgoing they are. Even when considering the other three elements of effective leaders, women tied with men in another two (how hardworking and ambitious they are).
Meanwhile, other studies have proven that companies are more likely to undertake environmentally friendly, renewable initiatives if at least 30% of their board members are women. Organizations such as the European Investment Bank have been campaigning to encourage having women in leadership positions for years now, and all of it comes back to one simple fact:
It’s good business.
Whether you’re looking at waste management or construction, there are countless examples of the fresh thinking and holistic approach that many women help to bring to their companies. For example, Coastal Construction’s Lisa Hamilton, Karlie Fike, Veronica Velarde, Sharon Mitchell, Julie Adams, Silvana Patino, and Lori Weingarten are the minds and driving force behind RENCO USA’s LEGO-style construction method. Their bricks are not only made from renewable composite materials, but they’re also certified to withstand Category 5 hurricanes!
It’s no understatement to say that women are leading the charge in making services environmentally friendly, cheaper, more reliable, and more effective.
But that’s just not enough for Trashco Inc., and certainly not for our VP, Leticia Resendez.
Leticia is driving the company to excel in every way; from making every garbage pickup on time, every time, to reducing our own waste, encouraging more diverse voices to join up, and supporting the communities we’re part of directly.
She is often seen with her boots on the ground, talking to locals at career fairs, driving donations at charity events, and cheering on the kids when we can help out with school programs. Just last month she (and the rest of the team, including our mascot Rocket) was cheering on everyone and celebrating Semana del Niño Pequeño with The Laredo Independent School District!
Leticia isn’t interested in just taking away Laredo’s trash. She and the rest of the Trashco family want to clean up the community in more ways than one - we want to see women and men, young and old, single and full families, all living better lives through the efforts of everyone. After all, it’s easier to build a better future for all when you’re building to the same schematics.
Everyone needs to do their part to build a better and brighter future. When it comes to companies this is even more important - a group of people, even while earning a living, can accomplish a huge amount of good for their community if they have the right leadership.
That’s what we here at Trashco Inc. are spearheading with women like Leticia at the helm.
Using the unique and innovative ideas of people beyond the stereotype of waste workers, we’re fully committed to paving the way for the next generation, however they choose to use the foundations we’re building.
So, if you need waste management services, consider reaching out to us here at Trashco. But, most importantly, take the time to support local organizations over mega-corporations. Support the innovators who care about your community.
Support inclusive leadership in industries that shape our cities, suburbs, and lives. You won’t regret it.
